Watering and hoses

Why is my garden hose nozzle leaking?

Garden hose connections seal with a small rubber washer, so a leak at a connection is usually a washer problem. Where the water comes out tells you what to fix.

Replace a hose washer

  1. Turn off the water and release pressure.
  2. Unscrew the connection and look inside the female coupling.
  3. Pry out the old washer with a small screwdriver.
  4. Press a new washer flat into the coupling. Standard garden hose washers fit 3/4 inch hose thread.
  5. Reconnect and tighten by hand.

Keep a small pack of washers with your garden tools; they wear out every season or two.

Prevent leaks

  • Tighten by hand; overtightening crushes washers and strips plastic threads.
  • Do not leave the hose under pressure: turn off the faucet after use.
  • Store nozzles indoors over winter; frozen water cracks them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hose leak at the nozzle connection?

Usually the rubber washer inside the coupling is worn, flattened or missing. Replace it and tighten by hand.

Should I use plumber's tape on a hose connection?

Garden hose threads seal with a washer, not tape. Replace the washer instead; tape is for tapered pipe threads.

How often should I replace hose washers?

Whenever a connection starts to drip. Many gardeners replace them every season or two.
