Watering and hoses

Do you need a backflow preventer on your garden hose?

Yes, it is a good idea, and in many places it is required. A garden hose connects your drinking water to whatever the other end is sitting in: a bucket, a pool, a fertilizer sprayer. A drop in water pressure can pull that water back into your pipes.

How backflow happens

If pressure in the water main drops, for example during a main break or heavy firefighting use nearby, water can flow backward through any open connection. Colorado State University Extension explains that fertilizers, pesticides and other contaminants can be pulled back into the drinking water through a hose-end sprayer or spray nozzle. Washington State's Department of Health gives the example of a hose left running in a wading pool: during a pressure drop, pool water could be siphoned into the house plumbing.

The simple fix: a hose bib vacuum breaker

A hose bib vacuum breaker is a small, inexpensive device that screws onto the faucet before the hose. If water tries to flow backward, it opens to air and breaks the siphon. Washington State's Department of Health recommends them on threaded faucets that do not have one built in, and Colorado State University Extension calls a hose connection vacuum breaker the minimum protection when chemicals go through a hose-end sprayer.

  • Many newer outdoor faucets have one built in; look for a small cap on top.
  • Some types are designed to stay on once fitted.
  • Colorado State advises draining them and storing removable ones for winter, as freezing can damage them.

Good habits

  • Never leave the hose end sitting in a bucket, pool, pond or chemical mix.
  • Keep an air gap: hold the hose above the rim when filling a container.
  • Use hose-end sprayers only with a vacuum breaker on the faucet.
  • Turn the faucet off when you finish.

Rules where you live

Requirements vary by city, water utility and building code. Lawn irrigation systems usually need a larger, testable backflow device installed by a professional. Ask your water utility what applies to your home.

Frequently asked questions

Is a backflow preventer required on a garden hose?

Many water utilities and plumbing codes require backflow protection on hose connections. Rules vary, so check with your local water utility.

What is a hose bib vacuum breaker?

A small screw-on device that lets water flow out but opens to air if water tries to flow back, stopping a siphon into your pipes.

Why does my vacuum breaker leak a little?

A brief spurt when you turn the water on or off is normal for many models. A steady leak while running can mean a worn seal or the wrong installation.
