5/8 vs 1/2 inch garden hose

Why diameter changes flow

Water rubs against the inside wall of a hose as it flows, and that friction lowers pressure along the way. A wider channel has less friction for the same amount of water, so a 5/8 inch hose delivers more water at the far end than a 1/2 inch hose of the same length. The longer the hose, the bigger the difference.

You can check what your setup delivers with a simple bucket test; see garden hose flow rate.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose 1/2 inch if you water a few pots near the tap, need to carry the hose up stairs, or find heavy hoses hard to handle.
  • Choose 5/8 inch for most yards, for runs over 50 feet, and for sprinklers or soaker hoses fed from a distance.
  • Consider 3/4 inch only for very long runs or high-flow sprinklers; see 3/4 vs 5/8 inch.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5/8 or 1/2 inch hose better?

For most yards, 5/8 inch is the better all-round choice because it carries more water. A 1/2 inch hose is lighter and fine for short runs and pots.

Does a 1/2 inch hose have more pressure?

No. A narrower hose loses more pressure to friction, so it delivers less water at the end. A nozzle can make the spray feel stronger, but total flow is lower.

Will a 5/8 hose fit my faucet?

Yes, almost always. Most US hoses use 3/4 inch garden hose thread fittings whatever the hose diameter.
